I am very excited to be sharing with you a book that a dear friend of mine, Angela Watson has just released about how changing your mindset can change your teaching! I personally had a REALLY rough school year last year with regards to people treating me professional, kindly, and even in some case morally right! So, when Angela approached me about reading her book I felt this was exactly what I needed to start off on the right foot at my new school! And even better yet, she has given me an additional copy for one lucky reader! Here's what Angela says about her newly release book:

So, when Angela approached me about reading her book I felt this was exactly what I needed to start off on the right foot at my new school! And even better yet, she has given me an additional copy for one lucky reader! Here's what Angela says about her newly release book:
Does the start of the new school year leave your feel anxious and stressed out? That's a pretty normal reaction. And yet, most of us aren't even aware of WHY we're left feeling tired and worried when nothing's really happened yet! Here's a tip to help you move past those feelings: if you're stressed out or experiencing negative feelings, that's an indication that your thoughts have been negative. The instant you start to feel unhappy, worried, or depressed, start thinking about what you've been thinking about. Your unhealthy feelings are actually beneficial if you look at them in this way; they give you insight into your unconscious beliefs and automatic thought system that you might otherwise fail to notice.
Negative or stressed out feelings can also provide a clue that your mind is not focused on the present. If you're feeling anxious or worried, it may be that your thoughts are centered on what might happen in the future; if you're feeling frustrated and despondent, you might be rehashing something from the past that cannot be changed.
When you experience an unwanted emotion, ask yourself: What have I been thinking about? Something that already happened and I am powerless to do anything about? Something that has not yet happened and cannot be controlled by me in this moment? If either one is the case, return your mind to the present moment. Clear your head of those thoughts, and your positive emotional state will soon return on its own.
All your feelings are valid, in the sense that you have the right to think and feel any way you want. However, not all thoughts and feelings are helpful and useful in your life. It's to your advantage to identify emotions that are not contributing to your overall goals, and counter them with healthier thoughts. You might be wondering if I'm suggesting that everyone should be happy and unstressed at all times. Absolutely not. Feelings such as melancholy are a normal mood state. But wanting to feel good and be happy is far from a selfish pursuit. When you're in a higher emotional state, you treat the people around you better and teach more effectively.
Think back to a time in the classroom when you were in a bad mood: How did you speak to your students? What kinds of activities did you facilitate? How much did you accomplish that day? Compare that to a time in which you had a positive mental affect: you were probably much more patient and understanding with students' shortcomings, willing to engage in more energy-intensive activities and go the extra mile to help students, and were far more productive in your workday. For this reason, feeling more happiness and positive emotions benefits everyone around you—especially your students, whose daily classroom experience is largely shaped by the moods you exhibit. Will our negative feelings ever go away completely? No. It's not possible to feel happy, content, and undisturbed during every moment in life. We're fallible human beings, and negative emotions are a natural part of our lives. We experience loss that brings sadness, and injustice that brings anger. Feeling these emotions can be a very healthy experience. It can help us to bring about positive change in ourselves and the world.

Feeling these emotions can be a very healthy experience. It can help us to bring about positive change in ourselves and the world.
Negative or unpleasant emotions only cause problems when we allow them to spiral into extreme, dysfunctional states like depression and rage. It is possible to grieve without feeling hopeless. You can be frustrated and disappointed without being overwhelmed and paralyzed with anxiety or fear.
By learning to examine your thought system, you can identify which ideas and processes are constructive and which are not, and slowly begin to replace unhealthy mental habits with more effective ones. If you're feeling guilty or ashamed about your negative emotions (or about the way you express them), you'll find that these feelings lessen considerably when you know that your identity is not in your feelings. You will have the power to observe your emotions and recognize their source in your thoughts, rather than identify with them and use them to define and condemn who you are.In addition to Awakened: Change Your Mindset to Transform Your Teaching, Angela has just released The Awakened Devotional Study Guide for Christian Educators! This workbook is designed to deepen Christian teachers’ understanding of the principles in Awakened, elaborating on what the Bible has to say about renewing our minds. For each Awakened chapter, this guide provides an opening reflection, devotion, further scripture reading, application questions, “to do” challenge, and a prayer that invites God to help you in applying the principles to your life. Angela has offered to give away a copy of either or both of these books to one Simply Kinder reader! Just enter below... super simple!

I would love a copy of this book. I want to also check out the devotional as well. Both sound so great! Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteI appreciated the thoughts shared in this book description. Although the back to school activities and ideas in blogland are fun and inspirational, I've also had some of those negative feelings creep in about starting a new school year and being anxious of the unknown. I'd love to also check out the devotional book for inspiration throughout the school year. Thanks for the chance to win!

I totally hear you. It's really hard to stay positive when there is so much negativity around you sometimes. I always say... the key to happiness as a teacher is being able to ebb and flow! Thanks for stopping by and good luck!
DeleteThis sounds like a great read! It can be so hard to stay positive, yet it is so important that we do. I'd like to read this, thanks for sharing!

So glad you stopped by. I am headed over now!
DeleteThanks for the giveaway - it is easy to sink into negative thoughts when the beginning of the year is so hard...especially in Kindergarten. Most years, I fell back to myself around December - about the same time routines are down pat and we are really on a learning roll!
ReplyDeleteI feel like I have done a really good job staying positive the last few years. I eventually decided that I am in control and if I did not like something I was going to change it. So I switched districts. Unfortunately I was not greeted so well in my new district which I account to NOT taking part in the negativity. It was like if I did not join in I was against them... which was so untrue. Anyways.. I don't want to really talk about specifics but I have been there and know this book can help! Thanks for stopping by and good luck!
DeleteI also had a difficult year last year and am experiencing mixed feelings regarding the start of a new year. Thanks so much for sharing
ReplyDeleteI wish you well! It's rough out there sometimes! I am sure this book will help. Just remember you are the only one in control of you... don't let the negativity change who you are... which I am sure is amazing!
DeleteI would love to have this book. Sometimes things happen that stress me out at work and I feel like this book would help me re-focus my stress toward a more Christian perspective and to trust in god.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, I am not a very religious person... however the one thing I did notice from my experience at my last school (and from a few bloggers I have met behind the scenes) is that people who are openly religious don't really allow this type of negativity get to them. And I am totally serious, that is one of the reflections I have had this year. It's almost like they know the difference between right and wrong and just don't get involved. (Maybe it was the people... I am sure it was the people but a strong sense of religion was a commonality between all of the ones I found to be positive and uplifting!) Thanks for stopping by and good luck!
DeleteI need a book like this to renew my thoughts on teaching after my last school year! I just have to keep remembering what my pastor said- That God strategically puts Christians in schools. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteChris... read the comment above! It applies here as well! Again.. I am not a religious person at all but I do understand what you are saying! For me it's about mindset and that's why Angela's book speaks so loud to me! Thanks for stopping by and good luck!
DeleteThank you for introducing us to this book! This is exactly what I have been struggling with-I am currently doing a Bible study which touches on negative thinking. When we focus on our negative thoughts, we are not focusing on God! Thanks for the giveaway also!
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome! I wish you luck!
DeleteThis would be perfect for me and several teachers at my school! I'm about to begin my 23rd year as a teacher, 16th at this school, so I could certainly use a boost. Additionally, we are in the middle of some big (and stressful) changes in assessment and accountability state wide with some particularly troubling developments for my grade level (pre-k). I sure hope I win!
ReplyDeleteI was there 5 years ago. Accountability is very stressful! My advise is to just go with the flow and not be negative about it. You can't change it and so the control is really in your own head. Good luck and thanks for stopping by!
DeleteIt saddened me to read your first description of what happened to you last year. I think I'm most interested in the study guide that accompanies the book. I'm a pretty easy going, positive person but I believe self reflection is a major part of that. It would be nice to have a place to reflect on and a prayer with it with definitely keep me where I should be heading.

Thank you for your thoughts. It was very sad for me. But every day I still drove home with a smile! I was so thankful to just be in this district and to have the opportunities I had. Crazy thing is that all the things that were done to or around me, really just made me look better because of my positive attitude. I don't want to get into specifics out of respect for my employer and those involved, but again, I am very thankful and learned a lot! I bet we would be good friends if we worked on the same campus! =)
DeleteI love this book! I would love to read this as it seems to be a great guide for the upcoming year! :o)

DeleteThis book and devotional sound helpful to refocus my thinking. I too had a hard year. Going back to God's promises and asking Him to transform my thinking was what has helped me through those times.

Thanks for stopping by and good luck to you!
DeleteThe description of this book really spoke to me. I am about to start in a completely new school system and grade, and I think this book would help me put my best foot forward.
ReplyDeleteI wish you luck in the giveaway and at your new school!
DeleteThis coming school year will be tough at my school. The principal was let go, the superintendent might walk away as well, and several teachers will go with him. Without good leadership this could be a negative year. Your book might just be what we need to do a PD book study.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Angela actually was recognized at a couple of trainings my district did for her work in education! I believe she does consulting as well. You should contact her! =)
DeleteI'm eager to read your book. I have recently come out of a long period of negativity after some staff reductions and other life challenges. There are good things ahead this year!
ReplyDeleteI love your mindset! Thanks for stopping by and good luck!
DeleteI am excited about the chance to read this book. Last year was a challenge for me and my husband lost his job after nineteen years at the same company. I doo not want to take any negative thiughts into this school year!
ReplyDeleteOh that's no fun! I have been there! My husband was out of work for about 6 months about 3 years ago. We were very luck that we had a few other means (like saving and school) to fall back on. He's working now but we are still dealing with it today... I am sure you can imagine. I have come to the conclusion to just go day by day and make each day count as much as I can! The rest is just things and numbers and unimportant! Thanks for stopping by and good luck!
DeleteThis sounds like a great book! And one that I definitely need to read!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by... good luck!
DeleteWow thanks for sharing this book. I'm headed to buy it now!

DeleteWhat a wonderful book. I have not enjoyed or been excited about my teaching experience for the past two years. With just the short discription, I feel this is the book I have been looking for to help teach me to be happy and enthuastic about my job. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI love Angela. She inspires me.

Much agreed!
DeleteI would love o read this book. I am transferring schools to avoid the politics and cliques of my previous placement. The year hasn't stated and I am already preparing for an unexpected assignment (I interviewed and was promised one grade level and then unexpectedly changed after the transfer deadline).
ReplyDeleteYour reason was so well put... I am going to steal it... I was moved to avoid the politics and cliques of my previous placement! I need to write that down! =) Thanks for stopping by and good luck!
DeleteThese both sound wonderful! I too had a very rough class last year, probably my worst in 16 years. I am trying to develop a positive attitude about the coming year but it is difficult. I would love to have both of these books to motivate me and help me develop a new perspective. Thanks for the opportunity to win them!

You are very welcome! Good luck to you this school year!
DeleteI really need this book as I also had a mentally and physically trying school year, both with staff and admin. I feel there is a strong link between our spiritual and teaching outlooks and the children seem to get the brunt of our negativity.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by.. good luck to you!
DeleteI whole heartedly agree with Angela's thoughts! Your attitude makes a difference in all that you do. I would love to win the book but will most definitely purchase it if I don't!

Completely agree! Good luck to you!
DeleteI agree with Angela's thoughts on your mindset and how you react toward your students. Sometimes I don't think I realize the full impact my mood has on the students in my classroom. Last year was a tough year for me personally - my father was sick and passed away. I think this book would be a great resource for me.
