Your secret weapon is an easy chapter book. They are great choices for kids who have just moved beyond picture books but are not able to read middle-grade novels.

There is a wide range of these books available and many of them are published as book series. The great thing about an easy chapter book series is that once you get a kid hooked on the first book they want to keep going and read the rest. Sneaky huh?
