Drop Everything and Read

I love to schedule Drop Everything and Read time with students! Every day, plan a time for a signal to go off to mean that everyone (teachers included) needs to stop what they’re doing and read! Students can get cozy around the room and enjoy a good book! I would also make sure to bring in a book to read during this time!

Guest Readers

Invite guest readers (parents, grandparents, administrators, community members) to read a book to the class! It’s a great way to foster community. I even had the mayor read one year and he said he probably enjoyed it more than the kids!

Buddy Reading

What a great opportunity to pair up with another class and read with a friend! I always made sure to mix it up and pair up with another grade-level class. Students loved sharing their book boxes with an older student and they had a great role model read to them! You can even create a schedule virtually for students to read to each other with another teacher. Or students at home can read with a sibling, parent, or even a stuffed animal!

Character Dress-Up Day

Celebrate your favorite book characters by dressing up! Students and teachers love seeing their favorite characters come to life! One year my team dressed up as all of the Pinkalicious colors (Emeraldicious, Purplicious..someone was even Goldie the Unicorn!) We had a great day!

Mystery Book Covers

Draw or get book covers blown up and create puzzle pieces to cover them up. Every day remove a puzzle piece and have students guess the book! At the end of the week celebrate with a read-aloud of the book. Pete the Cat books were always a big hit with Kindergarten students!

Celebrate Diversity

Make sure to check out the list of Best Picture Books About Diversity For Young Learners. These are some wonderful books to share with your early childhood students.
