Books About Apples

The air is crisp, the leaves are changing, and the apples are growing! What better way to celebrate this glorious season than by reading books on apples? There are numerous books available, but be sure to take advantage of these kindergarten favorites.  Here are some great suggestions on books your students will love regarding everyone’s favorite fruit!

Apples, by Gail Gibbons

This is a wonderful book to teach children all they need to know about apples. Children will learn the fascinating history of apples, along with details about apples themselves, and information on how they grow.

Apples, Apples, Apples, by Nancy Wallace

This cute story follows a family of bunnies on their visit to an apple orchard. Information about culture and basic scientific details about apples are presented, and the book ends with an applesauce recipe and fun apple tidbits.

How Do Apples Grow and other great books for teaching about apples!

How Do Apples Grow?, by Betsy Maestro

Another book on the cycle of the apple tree, “How Do Apples Grow?” starts in winter, and explains the details of the growth of apples from flower to fruit. Complete with labeled, watercolor illustrations of various parts of the apple, this is fun, this is a great find if you are looking to really talk about apples!

Johnny Appleseed, by Jodie Shepherd

A classic tale of American folklore, the story of Johnny Appleseed is sure to be a hit. Kids will enjoy hearing about the life of this legend who wore a pan as a hat and walked barefoot while distributing apple seeds as he traveled across the country. They will also learn about his great character!

Apples for Everyone and other great books for teaching about apples!

Apples, Apples Everywhere!: Learning About Apple Harvests, by Robin Koontz

Take another trip to the apple orchard with this delightful book. Your students can learn about how apples are picked and stored, as well as all the delicious and fun uses that exist for this fun fruit.

Apples for Everyone (Picture the Seasons), by Jill Esbaum

This book is all about the pictures! The minimal text in this educates, but the true stars of this title are the colorful, rich photographs. Children will see bright apples, and various pictures from the orchard, along with their presence in pies and other apple goodies. Both children and adults will appreciate the beauty on the pages of this wonderful apple book. This is a must-have for your apple book collection!

Apple Picking Time, by Michele B. Slawson

A heartwarming tale about the apple harvest, this tells of a girl, Anna, who has a big, self-delegated task ahead of her: filling the apple bin by herself!  Children will listen closely to find out while learning the importance of family and community.

Amelia Bedelia's First Apple Pie and other great books for teaching about apples!

Amelia Bedelia’s First Apple Pie, by Herman Parish

The silly antics of the title character is sure to entertain younger students. What crazy thing will Amelia Bedelia do next? They’ll sit and listen in anticipation as she mixes up phrases and words, thinking they mean something different than what they’re supposed to. This particular title follows Amelia in an autumn-themed book, as she makes an apple pie with her grandmother.

The Apple Pie Tree, by Zoe Hall

With this book, your students will hear the story of two sisters and the effects of the seasons on their backyard apple tree. They’ll see how the tree is beneficial to people and other creatures, along with watching the changes it experiences throughout the year. Much like other apple books, this includes further information on pollination, to make it a complete lesson that will be both educational and fun for your students!

Fall Apples: Crisp and Juicy, by Martha E. H. Rustad

One of the books in the Cloverleaf Book: Fall’s Here! series, this may be a good choice if you’re looking to do a whole fall theme. The other books in this series focus on leaves, pumpkins, and animals of the season. Kids will learn the basics of apples, and what people use them for, through a fun-filled story involving a girl and her brother.

Bad Apple: A Tale of Friendship and other great books about apples!

Bad Apple: A Tale of Friendship, by Edward Hemingway

One of the different apple books that are out there, this book uses the cute characters of an apple and a worm to illustrate a beautiful story of friendship between two surprising characters. It also touches on that oh-so-sensitive subject of bullies, in a way suitable for young children. What a great way to teach a good lesson on how to treat others, while teaching a themed unit on apples!
