Christmas Ornament: Invitation To Create

One of my favorite things about this Christmas craft is that it is inexpensive to make. If you don’t already have the supplies in your classroom, you can find everything you need at the dollar store.

To set up this invitation to create, put the clear, plastic bulb ornaments in a container. I always remove the tops so my students don’t accidentally poke themselves on the metal. Then, place all of the materials inside the ornaments in a muffin pan or small bowls. You can also lay everything out on a tray. If anything needs to be cut such as the tissue paper, I like to do that before to save time during the activity.

Directions:

To make the ornament, each student will pick a plastic bulb and then fill the ornament with the materials he or she wants to place inside. Placing things such as beads, buttons, and jingle bells inside of the ornament is a great way for your students to work on developing their fine motor skills.

If you are doing this Invitation to Create during your holiday or winter party, you may want to ask a parent volunteer to help your students. I always have this activity set up as a center so three or four children are making their ornaments at a time.

After each child is finished filling his or her ornament, place the metal top back on to keep the materials inside the bulb. Then, cut a piece of ribbon that is about five inches long and tie it to the ornament.
