Forky in Kindergarten

Your students will love these Forky in Kindergarten activities inspired by Toy Story 4! Check out this post about all of the super fun and educational activities you can do in your classroom with Forky!

When I saw Toy Story 4, I immediately thought to myself FORKY!!!  YES!  Kindergarten needs forky!  And I was not alone.  So many teachers in the Simply Kinder Teacher Facebook group shared their forky projects and so we HAD to share them with you here!

So who is Forky? If you have not seen the movie, you can get the book here. Well, the book is great for your lesson too!

THIS ACTIVITY WORKS WELL WITH

Andy grew up and gave her toys to Bonnie in a previous Toy Story and Bonnie is very attached to them.  So, in Toy Story 4 Bonnie goes to kindergarten but is not feeling so confident about it.  She is scared about meeting new friends and also about not being able to take her toys to school.

So Bonnie goes to school and the day starts but she is shy and does not make friends easily.  Her teacher is kind and loving, but Bonnie still ends up at a table to herself for a first-day craft (which is making a supply cup).  She ends up with no items to make her craft and heads to the trash to get some.

She pulls out (your needed supply list):

  • sporks (1 per student)
  • pipe cleaners or wiki sticks (one cut in half or two per student)
  • wiggly eyes (two per student)
  • popsicle stick cut in half (one per student cut in half)
  • modeling clay (a small ball to attach feet)

And with those items, Forky is made – a friend. In fact, he is now her best friend in kindergarten and at home.  But Forky is not having it.  He is trash and does everything he can to get back to any trashcan.  The premise of the movie is Woody being a great friend to Bonnie by protecting what she needs – the friendship with Forky.  (It’s really funny and worth watching).

And so all of this being said, Disney loving kindergarten teachers everywhere HAD TO MAKE FORKY and they shared them in our group!  So to start this lesson, I would start by reading the book.  It’s a great story about the first day of school and making friends.  Then I would move towards a discussion about what makes a good friend.  Here’s a great chart Ms. Mason made with her kinders (click here to see it in our FB group). I could really see this chart being hung up all year.

Forky discussion for the first day of school. Follow this up with a Forky craft! More tips and ideas at Simply Kinder.

And then I would create some actual forky’s with your students.  We gathered up some tips and tricks so that you can too:

  • use wiki sticks for the mouth and arms
  • create it at meet the teacher with families
  • the concept is to use what you have, so they don’t have to look exact
  • use wiggly eyes with sticky backs (no glue option)
  • you can use sharpies to draw eyes and mouth
  • prep the items in a baggie so they are easy to hand out
  • reinforce items with hot glue as the teacher
  • leave the clay overnight to dry
  • hot glue the eyes onto the sporks before you hand them out
  • if you don’t have sporks, just use spoons and draw triangles at the top to look like a spork
  • hot glue the feet ahead of time
