Halloween Books for Kinder

Looking for a great read-aloud for Halloween? Get the complete list of teacher-approved and kid-tested October books here!

Every theme we teach has a set of books that you personally love and so this is my must-read Halloween Books for Kinder.  We store our books in a big black cauldron-like bucket I picked up at a Halloween store.  The kids think it’s fun to have them be separate from our regular library.

This activity goes well with these resources:

How Big Can Your Pumpkin Grow - a great book for talking to your kindergarteners about adjectives.

Let’s start with the first book in our big pot of Halloween books, How Big Could Your Pumpkin Grow?  This is a great book for talking about adjectives.  You will see if your pumpkin can grow as gigantic as a skyscraper or as jumbo as a cowboy hat.  This story is easy to read and the kids will love using some new adjectives as they revisit this book in your classroom.

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin is a great book to talk about counting seeds.  It’s a little wordy, but you can definitely paraphrase some of the pages.  The students will explore different strategies to count the seeds.  For tips on how to count pumpkin seeds in kindergarten, click here.  This is a great book to do with our Let’s Plant Pumpkins unit.

Planting Pumpkins in Kindergarten can be easy with this fun book.
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything

We love The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything. It’s sort of like Going on a Bear Hunt where the kids have to remember the pattern with fun motions.  This is a great book for the kids to revisit in centers or during library time because they will remember to the pattern based off the pictures.  Super fun.

Who does not love Go Away Big Green Monster!  This is such a fun book that we often do at the start of the year for talking about colors and classroom behaviors but it’s really fun to put in our Halloween reading cauldron too.

Go Away Big Green Monster

Your students will love having the hiccups during Skeleton Hiccups.  This book does have a ghost in it, so you will want to decide if that is something you will want to have in your class.  He is only a character and is there to come up with some ideas to get rid of the hiccups.

And one of our newest favorites is Pete the Cat Five Little Pumpkins.  This is the classic Five Little Pumpkins, exactly how you know it.  What I love about this book is that the witch is a frog, so if you want to not say witch you can easily change that word to frog.  This book is, again, another easy book for the kids to retell in centers.

We also love Pippa the Pumpkin Fairy.  She is a sweet little fairy who’s wand stops working and she is afraid to tell her friends the truth.  The pictures in this book are just so cheery and vibrant and the overall theme of the story is so appropriate for kindergarten.  You can even use it for classroom management with this fun idea that originated at Kinder Drama – click here to read more about it.
