Ice Fishing For Sight Words

Incorporate sight word practice this winter with this FREE printable Ice Fishing for Sight Words activity. Luckily you don’t have to sit on a frozen pond to enjoy this activity! With cut out fish, magnets, and a free printable, your class will be “ice fishing” in no time.

Winter themed activities make the long, cold months pass in a flash. We reserve a special time in January to study cold weather animals and sports. I tie this activity into our winter theme when we read books and learn about winter sports such as ice hockey and ice skating. Other times, I connect ice fishing to a study of Inuit or Eskimo tribes. Living in Ohio, we know quite a few people who brave the weather to ice fish for sport.

This resource works well with:

Ice Fishing for Sight Words Materials

  • Ice Fishing FREE PRINTABLE
  • 19 Magnets per set
  • 1 Dowel Rod per set
  • 2 feet of yarn per set
  • Box or bucket for the fishing hole
  • crayons to complete printable
  • tissue paper to put in the fishing hole

Once you’ve taken the time to create this activity, it can easily be used again as a “fishing game” for summer, outdoor, water, or sea life themes. The students enjoy using it each time I get it out.

Using the FREE PRINTABLE, print the pages with the large fish on cardstock. Cut out the large fish. Make as many sets as you’d like “fishing holes.” Attach a magnet to each cutout fish.

To make the fishing pole, tie a piece of yarn to the end of a dowel rod. Attach a magnet to the end of the string. To make the fishing hole, I use a styrofoam box with blue tissue paper in it. The styrofoam box looks like a block of ice and is perfect for this activity.  A bucket would work great also. The students will try to fish out the cutout fish with their fishing poles. Once they’ve caught a fish, they can mark it on their printable.

To mark the fish on the FREE PRINTABLE, the students can circle the fish, color it, or use a dot marker. Sometimes, I keep the printable in a sheet protector and have the students use dry erase markers so I don’t have to make a copy for each student.

I hope your kiddos have as much fun fishing for sight words as mine have! What are some of your favorite winter activities in the classroom? Comment below and tell us about them.
