New Years Resolutions for Teachers

It’s that time of year again.  A time, of course, for teachers to relax and recharge but as teachers we also reflect.  And so here are some New Years Resolutions for Teachers, but really for early childhood teachers.

  • Do more art projects.  It’s so easy to get wrapped up in everything we HAVE to do that we lose the energy to make those items fun.
  • Sing more.  Learning a song is a great way to gain new knowledge.  I will sing the classics with my kids like the alphabet song and nursery rhymes, find new songs on YouTube, and make up my own songs as I go. Click here to see our Teacher Approved Video Lists.
  • Smile more in class.  Not saying we don’t smile.  Just saying I will make a conscious effort to smile more and make more of a personal attempt with my students as individuals.
  • Reinforce the rules more. I always start the year with clear rules that we say every day but as the year goes I lose sight of that. I am going to get back to stating the rules once or twice a day as a class with hand motions.  Click here to see our class rules.
  • Read more books to my class.  I don’t know about you, but I feel like sometimes I don’t read enough books to my kids.  We read the required books and I sprinkle others in, but I want to make a conscious focus on adding more books to my classroom.
  • Revisit homework.  Homework is a requirement where I teach but I struggle with it.  It’s hard to come up with stuff each week that is meaningful, fun, and easy to prep.  We created our Kindergarten Homework with Family Games for that very reason.  Each week comes with spiral review and a FAMILY GAME!  Click here to get the first week of 3rd Quarter free.
  • Play more.  That’s right. I want to make an effort to give my students more ways to PLAY in class.  I am not saying I want to ditch all of the learning, but that I want to add more games into the lessons I teach.
  • I am going to be a better teammate.  I am going to be kinder to those I work with. I am going to be more cooperative and more collaborative.  Again, not saying I am not, just saying I am going to make a conscious effort to work together so things work more efficiently for our students.
  • I am going to cut myself a little slack as a teacher.  Yes. I am going to work on not being so hard on myself.  If you are a teacher, then you understand.
  • I am going to work on having a healthy work-life balance.  My students are important, but my family is important too. I am going to work on remembering this and have some better boundaries between home and work.

It’s also fun to have some reflections with your students when you return to work.
