Paper Plate Pumpkin Craft

Can you believe that Halloween is just around the corner? I don’t know about you but I love Halloween crafts and activities although finding ones simple enough for Kinders to do can be a challenge. Learn more about how to make a paper plate pumpkin craft in your classroom!

This paper plate pumpkin is an activity that we have done each year and it’s always been popular. I like to let the children design their own eyes, nose, and mouth and it’s nice to see a variety of different pumpkins on display. These look great on a bulletin board or hanging around the classroom.

This activity goes well with this resource:

With minimal supplies needed this craft is easy to set up and works well as a whole class or small group Halloween craft activity. You should already have these items in your craft cupboard so hopefully, there’s not much that you need to buy. I estimate this whole activity to cost less than $10 for the class – paper plates and construction paper are the most expensive part.

I like to have the children rip up the paper, rather than doing it for them, as ripping paper is a great fine motor activity.

How to make a paper plate pumpkin

  1. Give each child a paper plate
  2. Have each child rip up some orange construction paper (you can have each child do this individually, or have a combined bow that they all share – this works well if some children are faster than others)
  3. Cover the paper plate with the ripped orange construction paper. Try to encourage them to leave minimal white spaces.
  4. Cut out the top of the pumpkin using the green construction paper
  5. Get the children to draw their eyes, nose and mouth onto the black construction paper
  6. Cut out the eyes, nose and mouth and glue them onto the pumpkin
  7. Hang around the classroom for display!
