So you’ve decided that you want need to learn more about the Science of Reading and how to incorporate the research into your literacy instruction but are not quite sure where to start? Simply Kinder is here to help.

First, what is the Science of Reading (SoR)? As mentioned in the article here, SoR is:

Generally speaking, the Science of Reading is a body of work including the study and research of how people learn to read and write. It is not a program, an approach, or a specific strategy. It is the acknowledgment of all of the science that is out there about how people learn to read and think critically about how you teach. It’s not stagnant and is ever-changing as we learn more and more about how people learn to read. The keyword in all of this is science.

Thus, as teachers, we must stay up to date on the latest research on how to instruct ALL our students. Keep reading for 10 ways to get Science of Reading support.

10 ways to get Science of Reading Support for Teachers

1. Listen to Emily Hanford’s podcast Hard Words here.

We always like to start with this because it is a good overview of the what and the why. Follow the research of ‘When we know better, we do better’ The below chart shows the HUGE impact that the Science of Reading can have on Kindergarten students. A must-listen for every educator.

2. Check out Reading Rockets here.

Reading Rockets is a fantastic source of information for all things literacy. “Reading Rockets is a national public media literacy initiative offering information and resources on how young kids learn to read, why so many struggle, and how caring adults can help.” Specifically, check out the FREE training modules here called Reading 101.

3. Consider attending a SoR focused conference.

There are lots of pick from such as the ones offered by The Reading League here (October 2022) or Plain Talk (March 2023) from The Center of Literacy & Learning here. The Reading League also has an online academy here that you can register for and take on your own or a monthly journal that you can get to learn more here.

4. Check out Reading Simplified Academy here.

Reading Simplified can transform your instruction with the support and knowledge of Dr. Marnie Ginsberg with core video content, 24/7 support, ongoing workshops, and more. What I love about this program is it gets straight to the point – it does not bog you down with ALL the information and ALL the research. It focuses on what you need to go know in order to improve your instruction immediately. Check out the FB live we did with her on a decoding strategy here.

5. Read a SoR-focused book.

There are LOTS of books to pick from and although each has its own angle on how they talk about it, they are all good resources for the big picture. Here are some of our favorites.

Shifting the Balance is a great book to start. It’s an easy read and filled with practical strategies you can use today. Highly recommend this book. There’s also an AMAZING collection of free downloads on their website here.

Uncovering the Logic of English: A Common-Sense Approach to Reading, Spelling, and Literacy. This easy-to-read book is a must for teachers to learn the phonics rules of English! The majority of the English language follows explicit phonics rules but most teachers don’t know them. Learn them with this book and how to teach them to your students. More resources from Denise Eide are below.

Speech to Print: Language Essentials for Teachers. Students learn from speech to print but does our instruction match? Learn more about the science behind language and reading essentials in this best-selling book.

Partner with fellow teachers for a summer book study!

6. Join a Facebook Group that supports SoR

There are LOTS of groups out there that focus on the Science of Reading – just search Science of Reading on Facebook and you will find TONS! Every group has it’s own tone, rules on what they allow things shared, and moderators. Find one that fits you and start digging in.

Our current favorite Science of Reading Facebook group is the Science of Reading: Book Study community. This group is super focused on one book at a time and everyone in this group is extremely supportive.

7. Attend The Educator Summit summer of 2023.

DeeDee Wills hosts this amazing online summit in the Summer of 2023 that has some SoR weaved in you won’t want to miss. This conference is the perfect blend of classroom applications (sessions we are used to from some known teacher-authors) as well as some well-known names in the SoR world.

You won’t want to miss this presentation! The conference is June 26th-28th, 2023 (virtual) but you’ll have 90 days to watch and learn.

8. Explore the resources from The Logic Of English here.

We absolutely LOVE the Logic of English book and highly recommend looking at some of their content too. It includes FREE and paid options to support practical ways to teach reading. This organization is based on the research of Denise Eide, breaking down English into logical steps to teach to your students. So many amazing free resources here.

9. Check out Simply Kinder’s Science of Reading resources.

Simply Kinder started their science of reading journey years ago as Jennifer’s own children struggled to learn to read. We currently have hundreds of hours of Orton-Gillingham training under our belt and regularly attend online and in-person events to learn and grow. Click here to see all of our Science of Reading topics, articles, and resources.

10. Learn about the Reading Rope and the Simple View of Reading.

The Simple View of Reading and the Reading Rope are concepts that are a must for a basic understanding of the Science of Reading. We highly recommend you research and explore these topics because you can go very surface level or super deep in each of these concepts. YouTube is also a great resource for these two concepts.

Check out these other resources here:

  • Emily Gibbons of The Literacy Nest (here) is a Certified Orton-Gillingham Educator and has Science of Reading articles to read.
  • Heggerty is another great resource for early childhood teachers. But don’t look at this as a ‘program’, look to their website for learning for you too. Their website is a treasure trove of amazing articles, like this one here.
