September Classroom Management Tips

Start September off with a discussion about classroom rules and expectations. As we start a new school year with brand new students, some of who have never been in a school environment before, it’s important to keep a focus on cooperative learning and community building!

Don’t forget the top classroom management tips:

  • Keep the rules simple, easy to understand, and clear
  • Model the procedures you want the students to do
  • Practice, practice practice! Walk through the halls, work on transitions, raise hands, etc multiple times
  • Follow-up with reminders throughout the day
  • Communicate with parents/guardians

Focus on the positives!

Some ideas for positive reinforcements:

  • “Wow, I noticed how you stayed on task and tried your best while working during centers today.”
  • “I heard students using kind words and taking turns at recess today. Fantastic job!”
  • “Show me that you’re ready to learn. Great job, _____, having your chair pushed in, materials out, and a listening ears on.”

Keep building those relationships! Greet students in the hall, ask about their day, send positive notes home, and show an interest in their families, hobbies, and ideas! Keep reading to learn about this month’s classroom management tool and grab your freebie at the end!

Fill the Apple Tree

September is such a fun month! Students are excited for a brand new school year, some of them going to school and learning from a teacher for the first time! This differentiated Fill the Apple Tree activity is the perfect way to support your lessons!

You can choose to print out the picture and then cut and paste the apples, or use one of the options to simply color in the different amounts of apples! It’s a great opportunity to talk about all the different colors that apples can be.

These are so cute, fun, easy to do, and great for September classroom management. Students can earn items for anything: quick transitions, being good friends, being quiet in the hallway, cleaning up their messes, etc. Whatever you think is best and necessary for YOUR classroom! It’s important to set the expectations ahead of time though, so your students know exactly how to earn those apples to fill up the tree.

When they are all full, you can choose a fun reward that all the students can enjoy as a class (further building that positive community feeling!) Some examples could be:

  • Free time
  • Bring in a stuffed animal day
  • Pajama day
  • Cookie party
  • Extra recess

Or better yet, let your students choose their reward!

Differentiated Plans

This month’s FREE printable for September classroom management comes with various differentiation options so you can pick what’s best for YOUR students!

  • Fill the Apple Tree for a fun class activity
    • 20 apples to color
    • 10 apples to color
    • Cut and paste the apples to reach a certain amount

Another differentiated idea is to do this activity with tables working together. Or maybe just a couple of students need this as an individualized plan. This could even work well as a reading log for homework, having students color in an apple for each book they read at home with their family.
