How are your students progressing with their reading and writing skills? Every year we receive a fresh intake of children and we have the privilege of starting new readers along the path to literacy. It is incredibly rewarding and yet challenging at the same time.

As I’m sure you know reading is a multifaceted skill. Young readers must learn to use many strategies as they discover how to decode the letters and words. Learning sight words is an important part of a well-rounded reading program.

What Are Sight Words?

Sight words are those words that are used most often in our language. Some educators will refer to them as “high frequency words” as we see them over and over in any given text.

When children can recognize these words without having to sound them out, their fluency levels increase.

The idea is for students to memorize and recognize these words. We want our young readers to reach the point where they see a word and know what it is immediately.

There is only one way to do this. Practice. Practice. Practice.

We can help by providing many opportunities for our students to perfect their reading skills. Games, worksheets, and reading apps are all great ways to provide these opportunities.

Easy to Prepare

Just download and print! Yes, it is that simple. Your students will also need crayons, a glue stick, a pencil, and scissors.

Four East Steps

There are four simple steps that your students must follow. This is how it works.

  1. Instruct Children to cut out the word strip found at the bottom of each page. Then cut along the dotted lines to make word squares. Once that is done, they can arrange them into a coherent sentence.
  2. Once the sentenced is formed, the words are glued (in order) to the blank table at the top of the sheet.
  3. Now it’s time to write! Writing the sentence helps provide some writing practice but does a lot more. As your students write the words, they start to work on something called phonemic segmentation. This is the awareness of different sounds that make a up a word. It also helps your students to encounter the words in a different way.
  4. The last step is to draw a picture to illustrate the sentence. This is more than just a time filler activity. It is a sneaky way to practice their comprehension skills. You must understand what the words are saying to draw a picture that makes sense. Also, most kids enjoy drawing, so this will probably be their favorite part of the exercise.
