Free Spring Sight Word Practice Sheets for Kindergarten

Are you working on sight words with your kindergarten students? Our free printable sight word practice sheets will engage your learners and help them work on their reading and writing skills.

Don’t you just love it when kids suddenly realize they can read? We saw it all the time at the library.

The door would fly open and one of our young patrons would appear waving a book. They were so excited they didn’t even stop to take off their coat.

“I can read my book by myself.”

Library staff gathered around to make all the right noises as another excited child demonstrated their newly discovered skill.

I don’t know about you, but I love to see the dawning comprehension in small kids as they learn to read.  One day they are simply listening to the story and then suddenly they can actually read the words.

It never gets old.

As Kindergarten teachers you also have the joy of guiding young readers along the path of literacy and it is incredibly rewarding

Early readers use a lot of different strategies as they learn how to decode the letters and words to become fluent readers. Learning to read and recognize sight words plays an important part in any balanced reading program.

As I’m sure you know sight words refer to those words that are most frequently used and repeated in text. Sometimes they are called “high-frequency” words because we see them over and over. Once children can recognize these words their fluency levels will naturally rise.

Sight words are all about memorization and recognition. Not about the spelling or sounding them out.

We want our students to get to the point where they see a sight word and immediately know what it says. It takes a while for kids to get to this point, but we can help by providing lots of opportunities for practice.

FREE SIGHT WORD PRACTICE SHEETS

With this goal in mind, we have created a set of sight word practice sheets. They will help the kids practice reading some basic sight words. As an added bonus they also encourage your learners to create complete sentences.

These worksheets work well for a writing station, small group, or whole group writing practice. They can also be sent home as extra practice.

EASY PREP

All you have to do is download and print the sheets. You’ll also want to make sure your kids have scissors, glue, crayons, and a pencil!

As the days are getting warmer the worksheets have a spring flavor, but they are pretty generic and could be used at other times of the year.

CUT, GLUE, WRITE, DRAW!

This is how it works

  1. First, the students cut out the words on the bottom of the page and sort them into a sentence. This provides great reading practice as children aren’t just copying a sentence, but forming one with the words. Be available to lend a helping hand as some students won’t be able to do this step by themselves yet.
  2. Once the words are sorted they are glued to the sheet in order.
  3. Now it’s time to write! Writing out the words gives that extra hands on learning that Kinders need. It also gives them a chance to practice their handwriting alongside the reading!
  4. Finally it’s time to illustrate the sentence! You might think of this as “busy work,” but drawing an illustration is the perfect way to practice comprehension skills. Students need to understand what the words say in order to draw an appropriate picture. Besides kids usually enjoy drawing and we want learning to be engaging and fun right?
