Snowball Addition Game

Kids LOVE snow. I would be lying if I said I didn’t too. (Although I am sure part of my love for snow is that it does not happen very often here in Texas.) To tap into that love and excitement for snow, I thought these Snowball Addition Game would be a fun, hands-on way for students to review their addition facts this winter season.

Snowball Addition Sort contains ten pages of centers, covering numbers one through then. Each page has a snow fort with a number written on it and three snowballs. Each snowball has an addition problem that corresponds to the number on the snow fort.

Getting Snowball Addition Sort Ready

After printing, it is recommended that you print on cardstock and laminate it so you can use it for years to come.

You will cut out the snow ball fort number cards first. You will do this simply by cutting down the provided line. You will then cut out each of the three snowballs. Just repeat these steps until all pages have been cut and then you are ready to go!

Doing Snowball Addition Sort

First students will lay out all of the snow forts on the ground. If they are just doing a few, they can easily lay them on the table. Students will choose one snowball. I encourage my students to first say the problem out loud. This seems to help them focus on the problem at hand.

Next, they will need to solve the addition problem. Some may be able to do this in their head or even with their fingers. Others will need to use counters to solve the problem. You can have some cotton balls included in the center for students that might need some extra assistance.

Once they have an answer, they will place the snowball on the corresponding snow fort. Students will repeat each step until all snow forts have three snowballs.

If you are working with younger students, or even struggling students, you can easily simplify this center. One way would be only providing students with a few snow fort numbers. As they master those, you can slowly add more in. Another way would be to only have one snowball per fort. As they are able to correctly sort those, you can add in another snowball. This can be repeated until they can do all three snowballs at once.
