Sound Wall Updates for Teachers

We have great news! Sound Wall updates for teachers are here! We have done a full update to our resources featuring our Real Mouth Photos! These updates literally took months and we are super excited to align them better, based on what we know now. In this article, we will detail the updates so you know exactly what to look for.

At Simply Kinder we have been learning about the Science of Reading for about 5 years and that learning has not stopped. We have made some edits to our Sound Wall and mouth photos resources to make them even better and so we wanted to outline those for you here. We also added a new resource that you can only get in the bundle, so be sure to read to the end.

Check out all of the Science of Reading articles here.

Check out these updates:

Alphabet Posters with Mouth Photos:

  • Aligned the keyword pictures to this entire bundle. For example, instead of monkey for M we did a map. We moved all of the other pictures to the teacher-requested section if you still want to use those.

Sound Wall with Sound Spelling Cards

  • Aligned the spelling patterns with the Auburn catalog of most frequent spellings for each phoneme.
  • Aligned keywords so they are consistent across this entire bundle.
  • Added a yellow color so that way you can cover spelling patterns you are not teaching with a classic yellow sticky note.
  • Made these into an easy print version for you. You don’t necessarily need to cut them all out because many of those rectangles sit next to each other on the chart.
  • Added phonemes above the mouth photos.
  • Added directions and overall made it easier to use.

Personal Sound Walls with Mouth Photos:

  • Aligned the spelling patterns with the Auburn catalog of most frequent spellings for each phoneme.
  • Aligned keywords so they are consistent across this entire bundle.
  • Fixed the titles so they are consistent.
  • Labeled the kindergarten set as a beginner so it’s designated on the pages.
  • Changed the red underline to a red highlight so it’s easier to see.

Sound wall updates for teachers

Sound Spelling Cards

  • Aligned the spelling patterns with the Auburn catalog of most frequent spellings for each phoneme.
  • Aligned keywords so they are consistent across this entire bundle.
  • Added a yellow color so that way you can cover spelling patterns you are not teaching with a classic yellow sticky note.
  • Ordered spelling letters in two columns consistently, column one is first and column two is second.
  • Updated directions on how this file works.

Spelling Pattern Picture Cards: These are one solid photo per spelling pattern per phoneme.

  • Aligned the photos to match the full bundle.
  • Added yellow and red highlights for word patterns that are visible to students.
  • And then made sure each phoneme had the aligned spelling patterns for the entire bundle. We also labeled the pictures so they all have the sound in the upper left corner, the spelling pattern on the bottom left, and the keyword in the bottom right-hand corner.

And then overall we cleaned up what goes in which bundle. Some stuff was included in duplicates, some stuff was unnecessary, and some stuff just needed to go. The big thing though is we updated the titles so they are more clear. The two bundles are as follows:

  • Alphabet Mouth Photos Bundle – Includes those great mouth photo pictures with traditional type activities. If you do not want to do a sound wall, this is your bundle.
  • Sound Wall Bundle with Bonus Alphabet Mouth Photos Bundle (previously Phonics and Phonemes) – includes everything in the above bundle AND all of our Sound Wall resources too. Sound Spelling Cards are included in this set and so this is the set we recommend. If you want everything with those mouth photos – this is your bundle.

You can click here to see what is included in each bundle.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “This is way more than just a sound wall. It also includes lessons, student activities, explanations of how to make each sound, keyword words for each sound, etc. The sound wall mouth photos are some of the best that I’ve seen (most accurate mouth placement). I highly recommend it!

Always know that we update our resources regularly at Simply Kinder. We take what you teach in your classroom very personally, so we are committed to those updates!

NEW Teacher Tips Cards

These are new and currently only available in the sound wall bundle. Each phoneme has a tip card with the proper mouth formation in photos and words, keyword pictures, any quirks the sound has, and spelling patterns. The spelling patterns are in order by most frequent, including sample words, and generalizations on when to possibly use that spelling pattern.
