Surfing Addition Puzzles come with twenty different puzzles, covering numbers 1-20. Each puzzle contains four pieces: one that has a surfboard and a number and then three with a different addition problem that equals the given number.
This activity goes well with these Simply Kinder resources:
Getting Surfing Addition Puzzles Ready
After printing on cardstock, I recommend laminating so that you can reuse this center year after year. They will not take up much space and can easily be placed in a plastic container or ziploc baggie for storage.
I find it easiest to first use a paper cutter to cut out each square puzzle piece. I then use scissors to cut out the individual puzzle pieces. After that, you are all ready to go.
Doing Surfing Addition Puzzles
First students will lay out all of the puzzle pieces on the floor or desk. A student will choose either a surfboard puzzle piece with a number on it. This particular student chose a surfboard with the number two on it.
She then searched through all of the puzzle pieces looking for addition sentences that equal two. She found one that said “1+1” and placed it next to the surfboard.
Once there were three pieces, each equaling two, that particular puzzle was completed.
The student can place it to the side and complete the steps again until all puzzle pieces are finished.
If using all of the puzzle pieces at once would prove to be overwhelming for your students, start small. You can either have your students match the surfboards with one addition puzzle piece (like below) or you can pick just a few numbers for students to do.
As students master those, you can slowly add more in.
