Syllable Sort – Free

Understanding syllables can be tricky for some kindergarten students.  The best way to learn them is to practice, practice, practice!  This free winter syllable sort will help you gain an understanding of where your students are with this phonological skill.

Why are syllables important?

Having a strong foundation of syllables will help students progress in their reading and their writing.  It will help them to decode and figure out words and read more fluently.

When to teach syllables?

Syllables are not something that I recommend starting out with!  Your students need to first master individual letter sounds.  Once students have a strong foundation in letters and sounds, then you can move on to working with these more complex skills.

How to teach syllables?

There are many ways to teach this topic.   Do quick lessons with your kids daily. Pick a theme for the lesson (food, animals, names, toys, candy, etc.) and then break them apart into syllables.  I teach students that we can clap them out, feel our chin go down, or robot talk.  The majority of students in my class have the most success by robot talking.   I model this for students, we practice, and then we practice some more.  We make sure we count how many we hear in each word.

I use this free winter themed syllable sort with students during my literacy stations in my kindergarten classroom.
How to assess syllables?

There are many ways you can assess students.  I use a variety of ways in my classroom – sometimes I call them over one by one and say a word, they break the word apart and tell me how many syllables.  I put games into my literacy stations and informally assess students as I am checking in with them.  Finally, I use this free syllable sort sheet that students can complete independently.
