The Day It Rained Hearts: Writing and Reading Activities

Presenting The Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond

One day it rains hearts and Cornelia Augusta catches a whole bunch of them. After examining them carefully, she quickly realizes that she has hearts of all different shapes and sizes. They are perfect for making valentines for her friends. As the story unfolds Cornelius Augusta makes the perfect Valentine for each of four special friends.

The Day It Rained Hearts is a delightful picture book that is perfect for Valentine’s Day. Younger children love the gentle pace of the story and seem to connect with Cornelia Augusta’s desire to make something special for her friends. Easy language and appealing drawings make this the perfect read aloud, but it is also a great book for the kids to revisit on their own.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

The story invites us to think about friendship and sharing and using our creativity, so naturally, this book lends itself to conversations about those things.

The book provides a perfect example of making a special Valentine for a friend. I love the idea that hearts aren’t for keeping, but for sharing. You may want to set up a valentine creating station as one of your centers for the first part of February.

AS YOU READ

The story also provides an opportunity for the children to look at the visual cues and predict what will happen next. As you read the story you can ask questions like.

  • What do you think Cornelia Augusta will do with the hearts?
  • Who do you think will get this card?
  • How will Cornelia Augusta’s friends feel when they get their cards?

The book doesn’t explain why Cornelia gave a particular valentine to a particular friend, so there is room for students to come to their own conclusions. You can encourage this by asking

  • Why do you think Cornelia Augusta gave this card to the dog/mouse/turtle/rabbit?

I thought this book would be the perfect springboard for some writing, reading, and comprehension activities.

So I have created a simple handout to help your students practice their reading and writing skills. You will find three worksheets based on the book

  1. The first worksheet helps children practice their reading and writing skills. They are required to pick the right words from the word bank to answer the question. This is a good sheet for students who need practice, but require something fairly simple .
  2. The second worksheet is a reading comprehension page. First the children read the story and color the hearts. If you wish you could ask them to read the story three times, for fluency, and color in each heart as they finish. Students then have to match the story with a picture and answer two short questions.
  3. The third worksheet is an open-ended activity. It provides the opportunity for students to draw their own picture about Valentines Day and write a sentence to describe their pictures.

All three sheets are designed to build students’ confidence in reading and writing, which is so important at this age. To get your free printable pages just click on the button below.
