Letters and Numbers Discrimination
We spend a lot of time at the beginning of the school year talking about letters and numbers. Our ELA time is focused on letters – identifying letters, learning the sounds, writing the letters, etc. Our Math time is focused on numbers – identifying numbers, writing numbers, and counting objects. These skills are so important for young learners.
My favorite books to read to introduce the concept of letters and numbers to students are Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom, and Chicka, Chicka, 123. These books are very catchy and a fun way to introduce this concept.
Identifying Letters vs. Numbers
THIS RESOURCE GOES WELL WITH:
Being able to identify items as letters or numbers is a very important skill as well. I want my students to be able to differentiate between what is a letter and what is a number. While they may not be able to remember all the letter and number names at the early stages of the school year, I want them to get used to the letter and number shapes and be able to categorize specific shapes as letters or numbers.
Stations
I do a simple center during ELA and Math time at the beginning of the year. I put out a variety of letters and numbers and have students sort them into the correct category. A variety of items you already have in your room can be used for this activity. Students can sort magnets, stamps, clips, handwritten notecards, blocks, etc.
Worksheet
I give students a worksheet after students have spent some time learning about letters and numbers and sorting them during stations. This type of worksheet is great at the beginning of the year because my kinders always seem to need practice with cutting and pasting. I love incorporating those fine motor skills into some of their work. This free worksheet is a simple way for students to show what they know when it comes to letters and numbers.
