Christmas carols are a great way to practice reading with your students – even in kindergarten!
This activity works well with these resources:
Each year the week before the holiday break we schedule a break from our regular reading curriculum. We stray from our reading basals look add some holiday spirit into every lesson. We add lots of holiday books and do our our Christmas Around the World Units, but adding Christmas carols into the mix makes for a lot of fun while learning!
But I quickly noticed that many kids did not know the words to very popular holiday songs. And that is how this Holiday Carols Book began. I wanted the kids to be able to really focus on the words so that they could correctly sing them. I quickly realized that we as a class were doing close reading strategies to talk about meaning and practicing fluency!
Kinder classrooms you can work on one-to-one, finding letters, or looking for known sight words. First and above can search for special sounds, read the passages for meaning, or even circle all the nouns! So many fun ways to use these!
Another great thing about using Christmas Carols in class is they help if you are having a holiday performance! Your students will surely sing loud and proud if they know all the words! You can even send them home to have their families practice at home with them easily!
And of course, we learn about other holidays other than Christmas so we also learn those as well.
Use them individually or staple them all into a caroling book!
You can get these five Holiday Carols free in my Teachers Pay Teacher store so that you too can practice them in class!
