Reading About Bats
Begin your day with read-alouds about bats. Here are some classroom favorites that are both fun and factual:
- Zipping, Zapping, Zooming Bats by Ann Earle
- Bats by Gail Gibbons
- National Geographic Kids: Bats by Elizabeth Carney
- Bats Non-Fiction Reader from Simply Kinder +. Grab your copy HERE!
After reading, create an anchor chart titled “What We Learned About Bats” and record facts that students learned about bats.

Interactive Bat Book
Use the Interactive Bat Book from Simply Kinder to make learning hands-on and creative. Students color, cut, glue, and assemble a bat-shaped book that teaches real bat facts like where bats live, what they eat, and how echolocation works.

Echolocation Game
Teach your students about echolocation with a fun movement activity. Choose one child to be the bat and blindfold them. The other students are “bugs.” The bat says “Echo!” and the bugs reply “Here!” The bat listens and tries to find them using sound, not sight!
Coffee Filter Bat Craft
Materials:
- White coffee filters
- Washable markers (dark tones like black, purple, blue)
- Spray bottle
- Scissors
- Clothespins (to be the “body”)
- Googly eyes or a gel pen/white marker to draw eyes
Steps:
- Fold & Color
Fold the coffee filter in half. On the top side, let children color with markers, staying mostly within the filter area. - Spritz with Water
Use a spray bottle or dropper to lightly mist water until colors begin to bleed and blend. - Dry Completely
Let the filter lay flat to dry. - Fold & Cut Wing Shapes
Once dry, fold it again and cut small arcs or scallops along the edges to create bat wing shapes. - Attach Clothespin Body
Color the clothespin black (or dark) if desired. Pinch the center of the filter, open the clothespin, and insert the filter so it “fans out” like wings. Add googly eyes for the finishing touch.

Bat Phonics Game
Students practice identifying the ending sounds of words with the Bat Ending Sound Match-Ups literacy center from Simply Kinder. Students match pictures to their ending sounds and record their answers on an accountability page.
