Idea #1 – Sidewalk Chalk Messages

Give your students sidewalk chalk and have them decorate the sidewalk that is used for dismissal. Students will enjoy expressing their creativity and spreading kindness. This will bring a smile to all as they exit the building on their last day of school.

Idea #2 – Low Prep Craft

Choose from an assortment of low-prep crafts. Summer crafts are calling and the last day is a great time to get crafty. Some of our favorite craft options are below.

Idea #3 – Pass the Plate

Provide a paper plate for each student and colorful pens/markers. Students will write their names in the middle of a plate and then pass their plates around as their classmates add a kind word or message. This is an easy way to make sure all students get to share/collect autographs since not all students purchase a yearbook.

Idea #4 – Make Friendship Bracelets

Pull out the bead and loom kits for friendship bracelets. Students can create their masterpieces or they can make bracelets for their friends. These make great keepsakes that students can wear all summer long.

Idea #5 – Pack Up the Classroom

This idea is a given. Classrooms must be packed up and cleaned before we can sail into summer. Students were an essential part of creating the classroom culture so let them help get it all stored away. Students can pack bins, wipe down furniture, purge materials, etc. The best part is that students truly love helping pack up the classroom.

Idea #6 – Make a Hat

Celebrate the last day and the excitement of moving up by creating a hat. Grab your FREE End of Year Hat set from Simply Kinder + HERE. Celebrate kindergarten completion with a graduate cap or use emojis for some extra fun!

Idea #7 – ABCs of What We Learned

Create an anchor chart of all the wonderful things students in your class experienced. We love an ABC format. Write down the letters of the alphabet and have students brainstorm something for each letter. Hold on to this chart and display it at the beginning of the next school year and students can see all of the wonderful things in store for them.

Idea #8 – Game Stations

You can’t beat game time. Students can bring board/card games from home to play in small groups. Students love being the “expert” and teaching others how to play their game.

You can also set up game/challenge stations of your own. Some ideas are below.

  • Paper Plane Throwing Contest – Students can create a paper plane and see whose will fly the farthest.
  • Scoop It Up – Students will place a spoon in their mouth and use it to scoop up candy (Sprinkles, M&M’s, Skittles) to fill a small bowl.
  • Point Up – Give small groups of students a balloon. Teams can only use their pointer finger to keep the balloon off the ground. The winning team is the one that keeps their balloon up the longest.
  • Cookie Challenge – Students will lean back and place a small cookie over their eye (Nilla Wafer). Students will wiggle their faces and try to work the cookie into their mouths without using their hands or dropping it on the ground.
  • Flying Puffs – Students will work together to fill a small container with cotton balls in this fun partner game. One partner will fling the cotton balls with a spoon while the other partner tries to catch and fill the container.

Idea #9 – Celebrate Summer Birthdays

Students with summer birthdays miss out on celebrating with their classmates. Send out a sign-up for summer birthdays and give parents the option to send in a birthday treat during the last days of school. Sing Happy Birthday and pass out birthday prizes so all feel celebrated.

Idea #10 – Last Day Blues Book Companion

If you love “First Day Jitters,” then you must read “Last Day Blues” to finish the school year. This humorous story perfectly captures the bittersweet feelings of endings and new beginnings.
