Reading Week

Reading Week is meant to put a spotlight on books and reading. A little bit of planning can make this a memorable week for young readers and foster a love of reading.

Favorite Book Showcase

Invite students to bring in their favorite book to share with the class. Showcase the books around the classroom for the week and enjoy reading them as a class. Pair this activity with Simply Kinder’s FREE Favorite Book printable. Students will write and draw about their favorite book. Display the printables and books for the showcase. Book Tasting

Expose students to different genres, authors, and themes with a book tasting. Decide what books will be appropriate for your students and collect 4-5 groups of books. We suggest having 10-15 books for each book group. Follow these steps for creating your book tasting.

  • Set up tables with a checkered tablecloth and display the genre, author, or theme for each table on place card holders. Place one set of books on each table.
  • Choose a small snack for each table that students can enjoy as they rotate tables.
  • Provide students with a paper chef hat. These can be purchased off Amazon.
  • Students will spend time at each table browsing the book collections.
  • Students will share which books they enjoyed the most after the book tasting ends.

This is a great activity to expose students to books they may not normally choose or have access to on a daily basis.

Themed Reading

Create exciting opportunities for themed reading during the week. You can choose a different theme for each day and encourage participation from home or sprinkle a few themed reading ideas throughout the week. Check out some themed reading ideas below.

  • Finger Flashlight Reading – Provide finger flashlights to students and allow them to read in the dark using their flashlights.
  • Furry Friend Reading – Students can bring a stuffed animal from home to have as a reading buddy for the day.
  • Wacky Reading Spot – Students can choose unusual reading spots for the day (under a table, on the counter, teacher’s desk, a friend’s seat, etc.).
  • Silly Voice Reading – Students use silly voices to read a book (whisper, robot, mouse, fun accent, etc.)
  • Reading Forts – Use tablecloths to create table or desk forts. Students will read in their forts.
  • Picnic Reading – Students can bring beach towels or picnic blankets from home for a special picnic lunch and reading time.
  • Fireside Reading – Play a crackling fire on YouTube and display it on your smartboard. Students can cozy up around the fire with a snack and their favorite book.
  • Buddy Reading – Buddy reading can be done many ways. Students can partner up with a friend to read, guardians can come visit for a special reading time or pair up with another class to read together.

Make a Bookmark

Create bookmark masterpieces as a keepsake from Reading Week. Cut strips of cardstock for bookmarks. Students can use scraps of paper, stickers, markers, jewels, and other craft items to create their one-of-a-kind bookmark. Laminate bookmarks, punch a hole, and add a ribbon to complete this memorable craft.

Reading Week Trail Mix

Celebrate Reading Week with your students by making “Bookworm” Trail Mix! Your students can help combine this trail mix using the following ingredients.

  • Mini Nilla Wafers
  • Gummy Worms
  • Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Pretzel Twists
  • M&Ms
  • Goldfish Crackers

Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and divide the mix into small cups for students. Yummy!

Reading Scavenger Hunt

Go on a week-long scavenger hunt to notice treasures in new books you read as a class. Decide which books you will use for read alouds during Reading Week. Create a scavenger hunt anchor chart that lists the items students will be looking to find as you read the selected books. Students will check them off as they are found throughout the week. This a great activity to engage students in noticing details while reading. Students will love the challenge of completing the scavenger hunt by the end of the week!
