Bucket Filler Activities for Classroom Kindness

A Bucket Filler February Kindness Project is a simple and meaningful way to help young students learn empathy, build classroom community, and practice positive behavior in real ways they understand.

The Bucket Filler concept is perfect for kindergarten because it gives students a visual and emotional connection to kindness. When we pair it with hands on activities, crafts, and daily reflection, kindness becomes something students live out instead of just talk about. The Bucket Filler Concept

The bucket filler concept focuses on teaching students that everyone has an invisible bucket that holds their feelings. Kind words and kind actions fill buckets. Unkind choices dip into buckets.

This concept is concrete enough for young learners to understand and apply right away. It also supports social emotional learning goals that many classrooms are already working toward.

Bucket Filler Read Alouds

Begin your Bucket Filler February Kindness Project by reading “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” by Carol McLoud and “How Full Is Your Bucket?” by Tom Rath & Mary Reckmeyer. Pause often to talk about what fills a bucket and what dips into a bucket.

After reading, introduce vocabulary like bucket, filler, dipper, full, empty, feelings, and kindness. The Simply Kinder Bucket Filler resource includes word wall cards that are perfect for this step.

Teach Bucket Fillers and Dippers Explicitly

Young students need clear examples. The Bucket Filler and Dipper sorting activities included in the Simply Kinder resource make this concrete.

Use pocket chart cards or cut and glue sorts to discuss real classroom situations. This helps students reflect on their choices and build self-awareness.

Bucket Filler Activities

Consistency is what makes a kindness project work. These simple activities help students practice bucket filling every day without adding stress to your schedule.

Bucket Filler Hats

Bucket Filler hats are a great way to begin the day. Students color and decorate their buckets with hearts and stars to show their kindness choices.

Bucket Filler Writing Center

Set up a bucket filling writing center where students write or draw kind messages for classmates. The book companion resource includes bucket writing pages that can be personalized with student names. Students fill the buckets (library card pockets) of their classmates with their notes.

Bucket Filler Bulletin Board

Make kindness visible by creating a Bucket Filler bulletin board. Students complete a Bucket Filler craft and writing page, then add it to the board. Students can write ideas they have for spreading kindness on the writing page templates.

Track Kindness With a Bucket Filler Kindness Chain

One of the most motivating parts of the Bucket Filler February Kindness Project is tracking acts of kindness together.

The Simply Kinder kindness chain allows your class to add a link each day based on a kindness challenge. Challenges include helping a friend, writing a thank you note, or including someone new.

Watching the chain grow helps students see that small acts add up.

Connect Kindness to Literacy and Math

One of the best parts of the Simply Kinder Bucket Filler Book Companion resource is how easily it connects to academics.

  • Practice sentence writing with kindness prompts
  • Respond to the story using story response sheets
  • Complete Bucket Filler themed printables
  • Incorporate math and literacy themed center activities

This keeps your Bucket Filler February Kindness Project purposeful and standards aligned.
