Fall Math Activities for Kindergarten

Kindergarten students need plenty of opportunities to see, touch, move, and organize objects as they develop foundational math skills.

Fall math activities can help students practice:

  • Counting objects accurately using one to one correspondence
  • Matching numerals to quantities
  • Comparing sets using more, fewer, and equal
  • Combining groups to solve simple addition problems
  • Sorting and organizing objects
  • Collecting information and interpreting simple graphs

1. Pumpkin Counting and Number Matching

Use pumpkin counters, number cards, and ten frames to help students connect numerals to quantities.

Students choose a number card, count out the matching number of pumpkins, and place them on a counting mat.

Try these questions during the activity:

  • How many pumpkins do you have?
  • Can you show me six another way?
  • What number comes before six?
  • How many more pumpkins would you need to make ten?

Make it easier: Practice numbers 1 through 5.

Add a challenge: Count to 10 or 20, or ask students how many more pumpkins they need to make 10.

2. Compare Sets of Pumpkins and Leaves

Create two groups of fall counters and ask students to decide which group has more, fewer, or the same number.

For example, students might compare five pumpkins with three leaves. Have them count each group and explain how they know which has more.

Try questions such as:

  • Which group has more?
  • Which group has fewer?
  • How many pumpkins do you see?
  • How many leaves do you see?
  • How can you tell which group is larger?
  • What could we do to make the groups equal?

Make it easier: Use groups with noticeably different quantities.

Add a challenge: Ask students how many objects they need to add or remove to make the groups equal.

3. Fall Leaves Math Craft

Looking for a fun way to combine math and a seasonal craft? Simply Kinder’s Fall Leaves Math Craft gives students an opportunity to explore the colors of fall while practicing counting and simple addition.

How to use it:

  • Have students identify and name the fall colors.
  • Let students color, cut, and glue the pieces to complete their math craft.
  • Use the leaf representations to practice counting and combining quantities.

Make it easier: Work with students in a small group and count the leaves together.

Add a challenge: Have students use the leaves to represent simple addition problems. Ask them to count the total and explain how they combined the groups.

4. Practice Simple Addition With Pumpkins and Leaves

Use pumpkin or leaf counters to create simple addition problems. Have students combine two groups, count the total, and write the matching addition equation.

Make it easier: Use small groups and work with addition facts up to 5.

Add a challenge: Have students solve problems with totals up to 10 or find a missing part of a group.

5. Create a Pumpkin Patch Class Graph

Graphing is a great way to bring math and classroom conversations together. Simply Kinder’s Pumpkin Patch Class Graph resource gives students a fun way to share their favorite part of a pumpkin patch while practicing data collection and graphing.

How to use it:

  • Prepare a class graph on chart paper and add the title and category labels.
  • Give each student the printable with the picture choices.
  • Have students choose one favorite, color it, cut it out, and add it to the class graph.
  • Count the responses and discuss what the graph shows.

Build the class graph together during whole group math, then place the student graphing pages in a center for additional practice.
