Class Graphing Activities

Young students need lots of opportunities to see math concepts in action. A class graph gives them a visual way to understand numbers and relationships. Students become part of the data collection process.

They can:

  • Make a personal choice
  • Collect class data
  • Practice tally marks
  • Build a picture graph
  • Count the data in each category
  • Compare groups
  • Find the most and least
  • Identify more, fewer, and equal amounts
  • Use math vocabulary
  • Talk about what the data shows
  • Write about their findings

These activities give students a hands on way to practice those skills with data connected to their own classroom.

Use Class Graphing Activities as a Whole Group

The most obvious way to use these activities is during your whole group math block. Introduce the guiding question and have students make their choice. Then invite students to add their answer to the class graph.

Ask questions such as:

  • Which choice has the most?
  • Which choice has the least?
  • Which choices have the same number?
  • Which has more?
  • Which has fewer?
  • How many students chose this option?
  • How many students chose these two options altogether?
  • What do you notice about our graph?

You do not need to ask every question every time. Choose a few that match the skills your students are currently practicing.

Turn the Graph Into a Math Center

Class graphing activities do not have to end when the whole group lesson is over.

After creating the class graph, place the student pages in a math center. Students can recreate the class data, answer questions, or complete the writing portion independently or with a partner. This is especially helpful because students are working with data they have already discussed together.

For students who need extra support, you can sit with a small group and work through the graph together. Students who are ready for more independence can complete the activity on their own.

Add Graphing to Morning Work

Looking for a way to sneak in a little extra math practice? Use a completed class graph as morning work.

Students can answer one question about the graph when they arrive. You might ask them to identify the most popular choice, find the least popular choice, or compare two categories.

You can even keep a class graph displayed for several days and change the question students answer each morning.

Graphing Activities Throughout the School Year

This is where a growing set of themed graphs becomes exciting! Instead of using one graphing activity once and moving on, you can return to the same structure throughout the year. The theme changes, but the mathematical thinking stays familiar.

By the middle and end of the year, students will already understand how the class graph works. That means you can spend less time explaining the activity and more time talking about the data.

Simply Kinder currently offers several different graphing themes, with more being added over time. This means you can build a collection of graphing activities that work across different parts of your school year.

Use Graphing to Build Classroom Community

There is also something special about graphing questions that let every student contribute. Students get to share a preference, see their classmates’ choices, and discover things about their class.

Class graphing activities give students a reason to talk about numbers because the numbers represent their actual classroom community.

Differentiate With Graphing Activities

One of the biggest challenges in kindergarten is meeting different learning needs without creating completely different activities for every student. The multiple graphing options help with that.

Some students might work on tallies while another works on writing about the data. Everyone can work with the same class data while completing an activity that matches their current skills.

Make Graphing a Regular Part of Your Year

The best part of Simply Kinder’s growing collection of class graphing activities is that you can keep coming back to it. Students learn the routine. You save prep time. The themes keep things fresh. The mathematical skills continue to build.
