Teaching the FLOSS rule does not have to feel confusing or overwhelming. In fact, this is one of those phonics skills that can really “click” for students when it is taught explicitly and systematically.
When students understand the FLOSS pattern early on, they become more confident in both reading and spelling. The key is giving them explicit instructions, lots of practice, and meaningful activities that help the rule stick. Check out these tips and ideas for teaching the FLOSS rule in your classroom.

What Is the FLOSS Rule for Kindergarten?
The FLOSS rule helps students know when to double the final consonant in some short words.
We teach students that we double the final consonant when a word:
• Has one syllable
• Has a short vowel
• Ends in F, L, S, or Z
Think of words like:
kiss, hill, cuff, buzz
Keep it simple: “One syllable, short vowel, FLOSS ending!”

Teaching the FLOSS Rule
When students understand the why behind spelling, they become more confident readers and writers. Simply Kinder’s FLOSS Rule teaching slides have everything you need for successful instruction.
1. Start With Noticing Patterns
Use the teaching slides to introduce words like:
cuff, bell, pass, buzz
Ask:
“What do you notice about these words?”
This builds curiosity before giving the rule.
2. Break Down the Rule
Your slides walk students through each part of the rule:
• One syllable
• Short vowel
• The word ends in F, L, S, or Z
Have students clap syllables and identify vowel sounds to make this interactive.
3. Model Mapping the Words
One of the most powerful parts of your resource is sound mapping.
Students learn that two letters can make one sound, so they go in one sound box when mapping. This can be a game changer for struggling readers.

FLOSS Rule Activities for Kindergarten
Use Phonics Book for Whole Group
Simply Kinder’s FLOSS phonics book is perfect for:
• Introducing the rule
• Guided practice
• Reviewing concepts
It includes explanations, reading practice, and writing tasks all in one place.

Word Dictation
We want students to write and apply this rule. Word dictation in small groups is a tool to support students.
- Dictate a word to students and have them segment the sounds.
- Review what students know about the FLOSS rule when discussing the word. Is the word one syllable? Does it have a short vowel sound? Does it end in F, L, S, or Z?
- Everyone writes the word on their personal whiteboard. Students can call out “check it, match it” once they have written the word.
- Compare spellings to the correct spelling.
This is a great way for students to check their work and talk through mistakes. Students build accountability for their spelling with this easy and fun activity.
Teacher Tip: Use word mapping mats to support students who need more support during this activity.

Add Worksheets for Independent Practice
Simply Kinder’s FLOSS Rule Worksheets give students repeated exposure in different ways:
- Identifying syllables
- Noticing short vowels
- Reviewing the FLOSS rule
- Writing FLOSS words
- Tapping and Mapping words
- Reading and Matching pictures
These worksheets provide a variety of activities that are perfect for literacy centers, small groups, independent work, and homework.

Tips for Supporting Students
- Keep instruction consistent.
- Use visual supports such as your sound wall and anchor charts.
- Provide plenty of opportunities for students to practice reading and encoding FLOSS words.
- Make students aware of exceptions to the phonics rule (yes, but, gas, if, etc.).
- Teach students that if the S spells /z/, do not double it.
