Use these phonics slides, books, and worksheets to deepen the understanding of consonants & vowels when students are ready to begin sounding out words. These activities will support students as they start breaking words apart to investigate the parts and connect them.

The teaching slides guide instruction through a progression of skills! You will work through a progression of sounds, letters, word mapping, and writing. Begin with consonants and vowels before moving into more complex skills. Progress through skills as students have shown mastery (CVC, digraphs, blends, vowels, etc.).

Phonics Teaching Slides

The phonics slides are user-friendly and will add a deeper study of words to your daily instruction.

• Introduce your phonics focus with a phonemic awareness warmup. Students will identify the targeted sound they hear in words associated with a picture list.
• Practice making the sound. Discuss what the tongue, teeth, lips, and mouth do when making the sound. Give students small mirrors so they can see themselves forming the sound. Incorporate your sound wall during this time.
• Teach the phonics rule associated with the targeted sound.
• Investigate and take a deeper look at words with the targeted sound. Discuss what students already know and recognize in a list of words with the targeted sound.
• Practice reading words with the sound. This can be done independently or with a partner.
• Match words to pictures to build vocabulary.
• Practice saying, tapping, and mapping words with targeted sound.
• Practice encoding by writing words, sentences, and/or a story using words with the sound. Model this for students using the slides on your smartboard.

The teaching slides are designed to guide explicit phonics instruction. Slides may need to be visited and completed over the course of several days depending on the needs of your students.

Phonics Printable Activity Books

Phonics books are companions to the phonics teaching slides and get tangible practice in the hands of your students. Students can work through the pages while you cover each slide and review books as they build on their learning.

• Students can complete pages in a whole group setting during direct instruction.
