What is the Schwa Sound?

The schwa is a short, unstressed vowel sound that can be represented by any vowel (a, e, i, o, u) in an unaccented syllable. It sounds like a quick, relaxed “uh” and is often found in everyday words like:

• banana (buh-NA-nuh)
• sofa (SO-fuh)
• elephant (EL-uh-phant)
• pencil (PEN-suhl)
