A Yes Day is the day that you say YES to everything! Sounds crazy, but have no fear! Discussion, planning, and a little creative teacher-ing will make a memorable day for you and your students. Use these tips to prepare for a successful Yes Day.
👍Choose the Date – Introduce Yes Day to your students BEFORE the big day. This gives you time to plan for donations, items needed from home, etc.
👍Read the Book Yes Day by Amy Krouse and Lichtenhell – Enjoy this read aloud before choosing Yes Day activities.
👍Discuss Realistic Ideas and Set Expectations – This is where you gently guide students in choosing activities that would be appropriate for the school setting. Explain to students that there will be LOTS of requests and you may not get to do all of them.
👍Send a Note Home – Inform families of your Yes Day and let them know of any items needed from home (stuffed animal, donations, etc).
How do students decide what activities to include on Yes Day? Follow these simple steps and remember to do this AHEAD of Yes Day!
✅Determine Appropriate Activities – Sort appropriate and inappropriate idea cards on a pocket chart. Students can include their own ideas in the sort.
🤷♀️Choose Activities – Once you’ve determined appropriate activities, it’s time to choose which ones will go in the Yes Day jar. Have students rank their top 3 choices and write about them.
🫙 Yes Day Jar – Place the chosen activities in a jar. Give yourself plenty of options. You will pull from this jar on Yes Day and sprinkle the chosen activities throughout your school day.
A Yes Day is the perfect opportunity to discuss and learn about opinions! Use this teachable moment to help students understand that everyone will have an opinion on what makes the best Yes Day, and we can respect all ideas!
